Title lecture: Lung cancer in young women: diagnosis, experiences, and emerging risk factors

Abstract

Lung cancer in young women is increasingly recognized, yet often overlooked in clinical practice. Receiving such a serious diagnosis at a young age poses unique medical and psychosocial challenges, affecting both patients’ health and quality of life.

Different types of lung cancer occur in younger patients, which may differ in biology, presentation, and prognosis compared with cases in older adults. Understanding these differences is important for timely diagnosis and appropriate management.

Separately, the rising use of e-cigarettes (“vaping”) among young adults has raised questions about potential impacts on lung health. While the evidence linking vaping to lung cancer remains limited and controversial, it represents an emerging lifestyle factor of interest in preventive strategies.

This session highlights the challenges of lung cancer in young women, the spectrum of tumor types observed in this population, and emerging considerations regarding risk factors and prevention. Awareness of these issues is essential to improve early recognition, patient care, and health communication.
